TA1-R

Go to any of the websites provided and individually research why your generation is not expected to live as long as your parents.  The five areas to split between groups and research are environment, lifestyle, family history, diet, and  education.  You are to divide the topics, research your chosen topic, become an expert on your topic, return to your group, and share the information you mastered with your group.

Two questions to answer during your research are:

bulletWhat changes have occurred in (your topic) to so drastically affect our society?
bullet

What information does every person need to know about you to make positive choices?

Following the group discussion, your notes will be collected and graded.

Burn Off
TA2-R

Team 1
Choose 5 unhealthy food items from your high school cafeteria.  Using labels on the foods or the Website: Calorie King, determine the caloric value of each food item (keep in mind serving size).  When caloric value is determined, enter the information into a spreadsheet document.

Next, take the caloric values and using the Website: Cool Nurse, find two physical exercises per food item that an individual must complete to burn off the calories consumed.  Using the spreadsheet already created, enter the type of activity, the length of activity, and total calories burned by each specific activity.

Survey Says!
TA3-R

Team 2
Go to the website Website: My Pyramid to learn how much daily physical activity is recommended for teenagers.  Write 4-5 questions relating to how often and what types of  physical activity the teenagers at your high school take part in.  Decide how many students from  each class will be surveyed, including boys and girls in each class.  After gathering all of the survey  information, calculate what percent of the boys and what percent of the girls meet or exceed the recommended requirement of exercise according to the food pyramid.  Record this information on a spreadsheet comparing the pyramid's recommended amount of exercise for teenagers to the average of those surveyed.  Use a bar graph to show the comparisons to the class.

Team 1
Using a spreadsheet, develop a cost analysis of unhealthy lunch choices versus healthy lunch choices.  Your food choices must be offered by the school cafeteria.  Gather data for four lunches--two unhealthy and two healthy.  Determine the cost of each of the four lunches, find the total cost of each, average the cost of the two types, and discover whether the healthy lunches cost more or less than the unhealthy lunches.
